Three arrested in search for Aussie brothers missing in Mexico

Three people have been arrested as the search continues for two missing Australian brothers and their US friend in Mexico.

Family and friends are appealing for help to find Perth men Jake and Callum Robinson and their US friend Jack Rhode, who failed to check into their Rosarito accommodation four days ago.

Callum has type 1 diabetes, adding to his family’s worries.

The couple is believed to have been camping in the Baja California area, near Ensenada, while they were surfing and camping.

This morning, Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade Ramirez told reporters, including 9News’ Alison Piotrowski, that three Mexicans have been arrested in connection with the case.

Ramirez said the search is focused on three abandoned tents found south of the Ensenada area.

The search area covers hundreds of square kilometers.

Ramirez told 9News the investigation is “incredibly important” to Mexican authorities.

Earlier it was reported that a woman was detained.

9News understands a woman was in possession of one of the brother’s cellphones, but it has not been confirmed which man.

It’s understood she turned on the phone, which caused it to ping a local cell tower and allowed authorities to track her down.

It is also understood that authorities found drugs on her when she was arrested.

Police said they carried out a major search today in the Baja coast.

They said the manhunt is big because they don’t have much evidence right now.

The brothers were traveling in a white Chevrolet Colorado.

Callum is an experienced lacrosse player living in California who has represented Australia in the sport.

Their mother, Debra Robinson, took to social media to ask for information or help.

“I am reaching out to anyone who has seen my two sons. They have not contacted us since Saturday, April 27,” she said.

“They were supposed to book an Airbnb in Rosarito after their camping weekend, but they didn’t show up.

“Callum is a type 1 diabetic so there are also medical issues. Please contact me if you have seen them or know where they are.’

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that DFAT was providing consular assistance to the family.
